English Alpine Ski Championships 2020 Day 2 – FIS NJR Slalom & U14/U16 Slalom

Day two of the English Alpine Ski Championships saw sunny skies and warm temperatures again as the FIS racers tackled the NJR Slalom on the Stelvio piste and the Under 14 and Under 16 athletes also took on a Slalom on Stella Alpina.

In the Ladies FIS NJR Slalom, yesterday’s fastest Brit in the FIS Slalom, Alexa Eliff (CDC) couldn’t claim two titles on consecutive days, failing to finish run one. It was Under 21 athlete Lois Jackson from Raven’s who was the fastest British and English skier over two runs, claiming the top spot in a time of 1.45.61. Sophie Foster (AMB) went one better today, as second fastest Brit overall and standing top of the Under 18 podium as the fastest English Under 18 athlete, in a time of 1.47.04. Just behind her was Giselle Gorringe (DRA) who completed the two runs in a time of 1.49.79. She also took second place in the Under 18s just in front of Holly McKey (BSA) who clocked a time of 1.55.37. Second place on the Under 21 podium was Hannah Gray (ATC) who finished in a combined time of 1.50.71 and Kathryn Bailey (BSA) who clocked a time of 1.52.78.

For the men, yesterday’s fastest Brit in the FIS Slalom, Oliver Weeks (AMB), also failed to finish run one, recording a DNF. So it was Under 18 athlete Diaco Abrishami (BSA), who was the fastest British skier over two runs today, claiming the English title for the Under 18s in a time of 1.43.85. The next fastest Brit was Under 21 athlete David Christey (EXL) who finished in a combined time of 1.44.19 and took top spot on the podium. He was closely followed by Tom Hudson (BSA) who was second overall, and the fastest English skier, finishing in a time of 1.44.30. Third for the Under 21s was Jake Doyle (AMB), who had claimed the English title in yesterday’s Slalom race. Second in the Under 18s was Jack Cunningham (EVO) and third was Max Pini (AMB).

In the Under 16 Slalom on the Stella Alpina piste, Charlotte Holmes (EVO) had an outstanding race, claiming the English title in an impressive combined time of 1.33.41. Behind her was Lauren Bloom (EXL) who finished second in a time of 1.37.29. Candice Bomberg (APX) was fractions of a second behind her taking third place in 1.37.77. For the Under 14 girls, Olivia Howeson (EVO) nailed two fast runs to take a convincing win in a time of 1.35.49. Molly Butler (BSA) finished in second place in a combined time of 1.38.47, with Caitlin Baldwin (EXL) in third position, clocking up a time of 1.43.04.

It was a tight race in the Under 16 boys Slalom, with Scot Fraser Baggaley (EVO) clocking a combined time of 1.32.95 after a super speedy first run, securing a third top spot in the U14/16 GS for Evolution. He narrowly beat Luca Carrick-Smith (BSA) who finished in 1.33.08 and took the U16 English Champion title. Third was Max Laughland (BSA) who had a total time of 1.33.89. For the Under 14 boys, Lewis Calder (APX) was impressive in the first run, and put in a second solid run to take the win in an overall time of 1.36.56. Second position went to Harry Duncan, also from Apex, who finished in a combined time of 1.38.25 and took the U14 English Champion title. Third place was secured by Freddy Carrick-Smith (BSA) who was the only Under 14 boy to clock a second run of sub 50 seconds. His overall time was 1.38.47.
