Nassfeld is the largest resort in the Southern Austrian region of Carinthia, yet it remains relatively unknown to British holidaymakers.
Located close to the Italian and Slovenian borders, the ski area itself is surprisingly expansive and has everything we come to expect from a resort nowadays – terrain parks, a snow cross track, a half pipe and over 100km of pistes ranging from beginner nursery type slopes through to the ‘Carnia’, a piste that is over 7km long.
Nassfeld is home to a relatively modern lift system, including the Millennium Express, Europe’s longest gondola. A significant amount of the ski area is north facing resulting in some fantastic off piste conditions for powder hounds.
Crystal Ski Holidays has recently added Nassfeld to their list of destinations for the coming winter season and is offering a range of packages to suit all budgets. You can see the list of accommodation available and more about the resort at their website:
Val d’Isère is embarking on an ambitious €200m (£170m) building project to redevelop the centre of the world-famous resort.
The project is being called Le Coin de Val d’Isère and involves the demolition and reconstruction of a giant triangle in the heart of the resort.
This extends for around 250m along the main road (Avenue Olympique) from the present bus station, in the direction of La Daille. The apex of the triangle is roughly the present site of Dick’s Tea Bar. Dick’s and Le Petit Danois bar are two of the many businesses that will be relocated, along with the central bus station.
There will also be a new piste into the centre of the village and an underground moving walkway from the centre of town will bring skiers back up to the main access lifts on the front de neige, the Olympique and Solaise gondolas.
The plans also involve:
* A total of 900 extra tourist beds, bringing the total to 25,760.
* Two new three- or four-star hotels, one of them with 51 bedrooms.
* Two apartment complexes and the prospect of around 100 new private homes.
*A new arrivals centre on the Avenue Olympique that will incorporate a welcome desk. Children’s crèche and a covered bus station.
Le Coin, a joint project between the Val d’Isère town hall and local architect Jean-Charles Covarel, will replace a whole range of 30-year-old buildings. The first of these will be demolished this autumn.
But some locals have already suggested that this means the project will only get the go ahead if it gets the agreement of several existing and historic Val d’Isère families.
Environmental studies into the effects of the development will be carried out this coming winter prior to the issue of final building permits next spring.
Construction will be completed in phases, designed to have minimum impact on visitors during the winter months. Work is scheduled for completion in 2022.
Other new improvements in Val d’Isère this winter include more snow cannons covering the long schuss back to town from the bottom of the Santons run ensuring cover throughout the season. This will then provide an alternative home run to the daunting black Face de Bellevarde.
There is also a long-awaited upgrade to the Datcha chair in the Solaise area which is being changed from fixed grip to a detachable quad.
In the same area, the Sunny Ride nursery slope (going down to the Tête de Solaise Restaurant and served by the Poum covered magic carpet lift) will have a whole range of fun obstacles designed to help children learn to ski and snowboard.
L’Étincelle is a new on-piste restaurant near the bottom of Solaise, with authentic local cuisine and panoramic views of the ski area.
New boutique hotel
The oldest cable car station in France is being transformed into the country’s highest hotel, with 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.
The former cable car station at Tête de Solaise, which dates back to 1942, is to be converted into a 40-bedroom hotel with a luxurious spa and a restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating.
In winter the hotel can only be reached by the new Solaise gondola or by snowcat.
The scheduled opening date is December, 2018.
The 60-year-old Hotel L’Avancher has been almost completely rebuilt during summer 2017 to create comfortable four-star which includes 37 rooms, a gourmet restaurant, wine bar, spa with two hot tubs, two saunas and a steam room, games room, and covered parking
The four-star Hotel Ormelune has been re-clad and an extra floor with 10 suites and rooms has been added. The ground floor has been given a makeover, the gym and meeting room have been enlarged and the spa area now includes three treatment rooms.

British Airways is launching two new ski routes for winter and has more flights available from Heathrow for under £40 than ever before.
The new Heathrow flights to Grenoble in France will depart on Saturdays from 2 December with fares starting from £39 each way. Skiers will also be able to reach the Italian slopes via Turin from just £40 each way.
The airline already operates flights between Gatwick and the Italian and French ski hubs during the winter season, so the new flights from Heathrow will take the number of weekly flights to the two cities up to 18.
Adam Daniels, British Airways’ chief commercial officer, said: “Turin and Grenoble are within easy reach of some of the world’s best ski resorts so we’re excited to be adding them to our Heathrow network. Our ultra-low fares will get our customers a round-trip to some of the hottest (and coolest) destinations in Europe for less than £40 and they can also carry their skis <up to 190cm> for free as part of their checked baggage allowance.”
The expansion of the ski route network from Heathrow also includes increased flights to some of Europe’s most popular resorts. Flights to Salzburg from Heathrow will double from two to four per week and there will be two additional weekly services to Innsbruck.
Frequency to Reykjavik will also be doubled with two direct flights a day from Terminal 5 and Sofia and Zurich will benefit from an additional service each week. For skiers keen to carve up the slopes in North America, British Airways recently launched direct flights from Gatwick to Oakland, which is one of the closest international airports to the slopes of Lake Tahoe.
The airline has also re-timed flights to Calgary specifically to help customers meet public transport connections to the biggest ski resorts.
It might be one of the hottest months of the year, but most of the talk was about skiing and snowboarding last week when representatives from the Savoie Mont Blanc area of France visited London to spread the word about new attractions in the their resorts for the coming season. Here are some of the highlights (for more info on the resorts, click on the names):
Visitors to Avoriaz this season will find a huge igloo in the heart of the resort complete with an ice bar and bedrooms.
Families with children under 12 years old can take advantage of the ‘Free Kids package’ on Christmas week.
A baby snowboard class is available for children from three years old and for teens there are freestyle camps.
One of the area’s historic buildings, The Grand Hotel du Montenvers (1913m), which was originally built in 1880 has been restored to its former glory. The luxury mountain refuge has 20 rooms, suites and dormitories and overlooks the Mer de Glace and the Drus peaks.
The Via Ferrata des Evettes offers an exciting Alpine route in the Aiguilles Rouges mountains, overlooking the Mont-Blanc Massif.
Club Med has unveiled plans to open a new resort in Les Arcs 1600 in December 2018. It is part of a stepping up in the pace of the company’s global development which in the next three years (2017-2019) will see Club Med open 15 new resorts worldwide and upgrade nine existing resorts.
This also includes the opening of Grand Massif Samoens in December this year.
The Haute Maurienne Vanoise valley includes the five ski resorts of Val Cenis; Aussois; La Norma; Val Frejus; Bessans and Bonneval sur Arc, plus 10 picturesque villages. It is sheltered, to the north, by the beautiful glaciers of the Vanoise National Park and, to the south, by Mont Cenis, a gateway to Italy.
The 360 is a new restaurant at the top of Plagne Montalbert where Michelin-starred chef Jean-Michel Bouvier will be creating a menu based on local products.
The ski-in ski-out 4-star family hotel, Araucaria, in Plagne Center is changing to a new modern style and offering new services this season.
La Plagne is formed of 10 resorts and is part of Paradiski. The ski area claims to have the only bobsleigh track in France plus it offers a wide range of après-ski activities including fatbike, zip wire, sledging, and dog sledding.
A new Hyatt Centric in La Rosière will be the first of its kind in a ski resort and in fact the first of its kind in France. The hotel will have 69 rooms and guests will be able to take advantage of the resort’s link to La Thuile in Italy.
Other new attractions for this season include VIP first tracks with the pisteurs and during Christmas week, it skiers and snowboarders are not happy with the quality of the snow they can get their money back.
Looking to the future, there will be an extension to the La Rosière ski area in 2019 which will include two new chairlifts and five red slopes.
The family friendly resort of Les Carroz, which is in the heart of the Grand Massif, will have plenty to keep children entertained this season.
During school holidays, families can use the Kid O Ski service which includes having your children taken to the ski school at Les Loupiots Club and back. Les Carroz’s creche takes children from six months old.
And the ‘icing’ on the cake is the Ice Age Experience which is unique in France. The heroes of the Disney film can be found around the resort and children can get photos with the different characters. Sid and Scrat are in the luge area in the Bardelle sector while Diego and Manny host tubing sessions.
New attractions this season include Le Lac du Lou, a new mountain hut, and a new blue slope called Les Bouquetins which enables intermediate skiers to ski down from La Masse, the highest summit in Les Menuires.
Les Saisies, which is linked to the Espace Diamant ski area, uses Snowfarming, an eco-friendly technique involving sawdust to keep the snow. The resort will stay open until 27 April thanks to the quality of the snow in this part of Savoie Mont Blanc
The resort, which has a wide range of chalets for all tastes and budgets, will open for the ski season on 16 December this year.
Tignes, which offers skiing and snowboarding for 11 months of the year thanks to the Grande Motte glacier, has some unique activities for visitors this winter. These include Bun J Ride and Ice-Diving
The resort also stages several events during the year. Halloween festivities will be held in October, Sport Values in November, Tignes Sprint & Jump in January and August, and Live in Tignes by Francofolies in April.
Sitting comfortably on the stateline between California and Nevada, Heavenly Ski Resort offers skiers and boarders a unique opportunity to ski two US states in one day, on top of experiencing the lively, flashy casino atmosphere that Nevada is famous for.
The ski area, which is one of the largest in the USA, offers 4,800 acres of terrain, all at well over 2,000m above sea level, accessed by 28 lifts (mainly chairlifts), unparalleled views of Lake Tahoe in one direction, and Nevada’s ‘desert’ on the other. The other resorts around the lake are linked by bus, some of them free of charge with a valid lift pass.
