When winter arrives, there is one thing skiers and winter lovers are hoping for: plenty of snow. In Obertauern, this is more than just a hope. The Austrian winter sports destination has a remarkable natural advantage and a scientific study confirms just how special it is.
A place where snow is part of the landscape
At 1,740 metres above sea level, Obertauern is one of the highest winter sports destinations in Austria. Its high-altitude location is one of the reasons why snow is such a familiar part of winter here.
But there is another interesting feature: Obertauern can receive snow from both the north and the south. Its location in the Tauern mountains creates favourable conditions for snowfall from different weather systems. The result is often a deep, long-lasting snow cover. This combination makes Obertauern Austria’s snowiest winter sports destination and this has been confirmed by a scientific study.
The result is impressive: Obertauern has an average maximum snow depth of 264 centimetres, putting it at the top of the comparison of Austrian winter sports destinations.
So Obertauern isn’t called Austria’s snowiest winter sports destination simply because it often looks beautifully white.

Ski-in, ski-out – straight from your accommodation onto the slopes
The snow is not the only thing that makes a winter holiday in Obertauern special. The resort is also known for its convenient ski-in, ski-out setup. Many accommodations are located directly on or very close to the slopes, meaning you can put on your skis and head straight onto the mountain.
The ski area is located between around 1,630 and 2,313 metres and offers a wide variety of slopes for different levels. The lifts and cable cars are arranged around the famous Tauernrunde, allowing skiers to explore the ski area without having to use a car.
And winter in Obertauern is not only about skiing. Snow-covered winter hiking trails, cross-country skiing, tobogganing and horse-drawn sleigh rides offer plenty of ways to enjoy the mountains away from the slopes.

It is the combination of its high-altitude location, its position in the Tauern mountains and favourable snowfall from both northern and southern weather systems.
