Need more skiing and snowboarding? Head for the glaciers this summer

Many resorts extended their seasons this year to cater from the huge demand from skiers and snowboarders following the lifting of covid and travel restrictions.

But for those who still need another ‘fix’ of skiing and snowboarding, there are still opportunities during the summer.

Three French ski areas have announced their 2022 dates for glacier skiing.

Les 2 Alpes claims to have Europe’s largest skiable glacier with 90 hectares of marked runs and a snow park, located between altitudes of 3,200m and 3,600m.

Its summer ski season will resume less than a month after closing for winter. It will open from Saturday 28 May to 15 August between 8am to 12.30pm every day.

The Pisaillas glacier above Val d’Isere will open this year for four weeks from 11 June to 10 July. Skiers and snowboarders can access the glacier using the Cascade chair and Montet drag lift which are open to the public from 7.30am to noon daily. Three runs (Moraine, Pisaillas and Montet) are open to the public and another three (Champions, Aiguille Pers and Roche) reserved for ski team training.

Tignes will offer skiing and snowboarding on their Grand Motte glacier from 18 June to 31 July. The recently upgraded cable car above the glacier is one of just a few in the world offering a ‘balcony’ on the roof of the cabin for people wishing to ascend above 3,000m in the open air.

Tignes has numerous summer activities on offer besides snow sports and after the glacier closes to skiers and boarders and the resort will remain open until 4 September.

In Switzerland, Crans Montana is another ski area to announce it is aiming to offer skiing and boarding in to June.

The resort says their slopes on the Plaine Morte glacier will remain accessible via the Violettes Express and Funitel gondolas, as well as the Lac ski lift.

As well as ski slopes the resort’s snowpark will move up onto the glacier from 30 April.

The resort was originally closing on 18 April, and staying open through May and into June depends on the snow lasting.

Other ski areas staying open into June include Austria’s Kaunertal, Kitzsteinhorn, Stubai and Hintertux glaciers.
