Gurgl gears up for this season

The RAC (Royal Automobile Club) in London provided another great location for a recent lunch for ski and travel journalists, this time hosted by the Austrian ski area of Gurgl and the Tyrolean region of Ötztal.

Skier & Snowboarder magazine publisher Frank ‘Scoop’ Baldwin is pictured with Anna Pircher (on the right), the area’s PR and Media manager, and Martina Jamnig, the Austrian National Tourist Office’s UK Market Manager.

They, and other hosts from the area, were keen to push home the advantages of the Ötztal region to skiers and snowboarders, which include the altitude of Gurgl (1,793 to 3,030 m), which makes it very snow sure, and the length of its season, which traditionally starts in mid to late November and ends in April. The area, which combines Obergurl and Hochgurgl, is also a popular summer tourist destination.

Also present was Alban Scheiber who, with his twin brother Attila, now own and run many of the hotels, lifts and other attractions in the area which were originally set up by their grandparents.

The area is known as the ‘Diamond of the Alps’, and another of the jewels in the family crown, which the twins created themselves, is a motorcycle museum which houses an amazing display of hundreds of different bikes and other vehicles.

It is located at The Crosspoint on the Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road in Gurgl that links Austria to Italy, a popular attraction for skiers and snowboarders in the winter season and the 100,000-plus motorcyclists who ride the route from Tirol’s Ötztal Valley to Italy’s South Tyrol in the summer, with many stopping to visit the museum.

But what makes it even more special is that following a devastating fire in January 2021, which completely destroyed the original museum and the rare and historic collection of vehicles it housed, a new museum has risen like a phoenix from the ashes.

Frank asked Alban how he and his brother managed to find more motorbikes and vehicles to put on display? Alban explained that when it was announced they were going to rebuild the museum, such was its popularity that they were offered more than 2,000 exhibits from enthusiasts all over the world.

The original museum was an impressive attraction, but the replacement is said to be even more amazing. Staff at the Skier & Snowboarder magazine can’t wait to visit.

There are plenty of other attractions for skiers and snowboarders on and off the slopes in Gurgl. There are hiking trails, snowshoe and ski tours, a night time ride on the 3km toboggan run in Hochgurgl, ice curling, night skiing and snowboarding, and special shows.

Another diamond is added to the crown

As well as winter and summer tourists, Ötztal is aiming to attract businesses and corporate bodies through its new Gurgl Carat which is described as an Alpine Space for Inspiration.

It is architecturally modelled on a diamond and is designed to host congresses, conferences and workshops to concerts and regional events. Organisers will have access to state-of-the-art technology.

The Largest room (450 m²) offers space for 500+ people and there are separate break-out rooms for smaller meetings

Gurgl Carat is located in the centre of Ötztal’s village of Obergurgl
