Chamonix-Mont Blanc’s spring ski touring event returns and is open to everybody from beginner to expert

‘La Trace des Grands’, Chamonix-Mont Blanc’s International Ski Mountaineering and Freeride Event, returns to the French resort for the second time on the 4-5 March 2023.

Conceived and organised by the Outdoor Legacy Association, this year’s event has three races to choose from following a route above the Argentière basin at the Grands Montets. The courses have been designed to cater for everyone from beginner to expert and allows public access at various strategic points, to create a festival atmosphere.

The three races are open to anyone who enjoys ski touring and off-piste descents. ‘TDG 65’ (Sun 5 March) covers 2040m of ascent and 1323m of descent with a steep, uneven ridge-like course along the Rachasses ridge with views of the Aiguille Verte and the Drus; ‘TDG 110’ (Sun 5 March) is an exploration of the high mountains in safety at racers’ own pace from the top of the Grands Montets with glacial backdrops overlooked by Mont Blanc and the Aiguille Verte with 1298m of ascent and 1298m of descent; ‘TDG Vertical’ (Saturday 4 March) offers a moderate gain on a closed track covering 720m of ascent.

As well as the three races, the event features an Expo Village with over 20 brands to test, including touring skis, freeride skis and splits with pros on hands for advice and chat. Other activities include ‘The Yogi’ (courtesy of W2W Blizzard Techinca), a ski touring and yoga experience; meetings and mountain workshops; a live DJ; plus many more surprises
