Skier makes history at Vialattea’s Audi FIS Ski World Cup

Vialattea enjoyed a successful Audi FIS Ski World Cup in Sestriere last weekend, a competition which saw American skier Mikaela Shiffrin claim her 100th World Cup victory in a history-making moment, with Italian Federica Brignone also claiming two victories throughout the weekend.

The event started on Friday 21 February with the first of two Giant Slalom races, with an estimated 8,000 spectators in attendance for the race. Sestriere’s Mayor, Gianni Poncet, and Piedmont Region Councillor, Marina Chiarelli, were joined by the highly celebrated Alpine skier Alberto Tomba for the podium ceremony, where Italian Federica Brignone brought home the top spot, giving the local fans in attendance plenty to celebrate.

Saturday 22 February saw competitors in the second Giant Slalom race take to the slopes, with over 15,000 spectators watching the event unfold on the iconic Kandahar Giovanni Alberto Agnelli Olympic slope. Federica Brignone once again took the crown for the race, in a triumphant moment for Italian fans, with skiing legend Deborah Compagnoni returning to the Kandahar slope to present the award.

Bringing the weekend to a close in a spectacular fashion, Sunday 23 February saw Sestriere host the Slalom event, drawing over 10,000 spectators to the slopes. American Mikaela Shiffrin took the title for the final event, marking her 100th World Cup victory – a feat which has never before been achieved. Cementing her place in skiing history, the momentous achievement was met with huge excitement from the gathered spectators, with Shiffrin thanking the crowd for their support throughout the race.

The success of this year’s World Cup has further built on Sestriere’s reputation as a leading sporting destination, with skiers visiting the ski area able to follow in the footsteps of some of skiing’s greatest champions.
