Four decades on the mountain
The Skier started life as an A4 magazine in the early 1980s. By the beginning of the 1990s an independent study by Sports Marketing Surveys had found it to be Britain’s best read ski magazine, and it went on to reach a regular paid-for ABC circulation of more than 25,000 — the highest in its history. The Snowboarder was added to the title during the 1990s, reflecting the growing interest in the sport.
By the year 2000 more than a million wintersports enthusiasts were taking a ski or snowboard holiday. To reach as many of them as possible, the publishers took the bold decision to move from a paid-for title to free distribution, and to change format from A4 to tabloid. It has reaped huge rewards, and the magazine now reaches more readers than at any point in its history.
